Communication with God
Today’s reading: Numbers 7:1-89
My selection: Numbers 7:89
89 And when Moses went into the tent of meeting to speak with the Lord, he heard the voice speaking to him from above the mercy seat that was on the ark of the testimony, from between the two cherubim; and it spoke to him.
My reflections: The completion of the tabernacle, the furnishings and the vestments of the priests was celebrated over a twelve day period with each tribe providing sacrifices for each of the twelve days. All this culminated with Moses entering the tent of meeting to speak with the LORD. He heard the voice speaking to him from above the mercy seat between the two cherubim.
God’s communication is not given in the same manner all through history but it is always clear and unmistakeable to the believer. He spoke audibly to some, like Moses and the prophets. He spoke both audibly and tangibly in His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. He spoke through the Apostles as they were inspired by the Holy Spirit to write the New Testament.
My challenge: We err if we seek some other kind of personal communication with God ignoring the means of communication He has already given: His Word and prayer. I have felt God’s presence at times in my life more vividly than usual. I have been impressed at times with God’s direction for me through His Holy Spirit in accordance with His Word. But I do not seek or expect some kind of personal audible “word” from Him as He gave to Moses. He has spoken through His Son. The Bible is His Word, to me and to all whether we believe it or not. Hear His Word. Pray to Him. He has spoken finally and definitively through His Son and His Word. He welcomes us to come before His throne in prayer (Hebrews 1:1-2;4:14-16).
