Contentment in God’s Service
Today’s reading: 1 Corinthians 7:1-9:27
My selection: I Corinthians 7:17
17 Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches.
My reflections: In this chapter, Paul admonishes the believers in Corinth not to be restless, but to be focused on the work of the kingdom of God. Marriage, with all the joys it can bring, is not heaven. For some it has brought little joy, and it always distracts, as much as it helps, the disciple who is seeking to serve the Lord.
Here is a call to contentment and discipline to serve the Lord in the state in which He has called you. One should not think that by changing one’s marital status or social status he can suddenly be delivered from all the trials of this life. It’s okay to marry. It’s okay to gain freedom from slavery. But life will still have problems.
My challenge:Are you content? Accept the things you cannot change about your life and press on in the service of the Lord.
