God’s Great Global Plan

Week 41 in the Word—October 8-14, 2021
The prophet Isaiah received and recorded a conversation between the LORD and His Servant, whom we know as the Incarnate Son of God:
“It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth” (Isaiah 49:6 ESV).
These words should have alerted the descendants of Israel that God had bigger plans than to merely redeem their one extended family. God sent His Son because He loved the world, including Israel but not limited to her (John 3:16). No wonder Jesus made it clear that He sent His disciples to make more disciples of “all nations” beginning in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. (Matt. 28:18-20; Acts 1:8).
Jesus knew that He was the fulfillment of the prophecies of Isaiah. Luke documented that our Lord read from Isaiah in the synagogue in Nazareth announcing that those words had been fulfilled in their hearing (Luke 4:18-20; Isaiah 61:1). At first, the synagogue attendees marveled at Jesus’ words, but as He went on to comment about God’s grace to the Gentiles, they became enraged with Him. They tried to kill Him that day and they later would succeed but only in God’s timing on Calvary on the Passover.
Last weekend my local church held a world missions conference that refocused us on the world and on the need for the gospel to be proclaimed in every nation including places where it is dangerous to preach the gospel openly and even to be a Christian. This is the reason Jesus came, to be a light for the nations that God’s salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.
I was grateful for a conference designed to keep us praying, giving, sending, and going to the ends of the earth with the good news of life in Christ.
Have a great week in the Word and remember to pray for our brothers and sisters who follow Christ and carry their crosses daily despite threats of imprisonment and death. They, like us, are part of God’s great global plan.
