Ignorant Idols; Blinded Idolaters

Today’s reading: 1 Chronicles 9:1-11:9

My selection: I Chronicles 10:8-9

The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. And they stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to carry the good news to their idols and to the people.

My reflections: When the Philistines found that Saul and his sons were dead, they “sent messengers throughout the land to carry the good news to their idols and to the people.” This action strikes me as something between hilarious and ludicrous. The idols don’t know what has happened but the Philistines worship them as if they had effected the victory. Who is more ignorant the idols or the idol worshipers who foolishly attribute to them powers which they do not possess?

Apart from the grace of God, we would not connect the dots either.

My challenge: If you have been enabled by God to see the folly of worshiping another god, give thanks to Him. His mercy is great. Pray for your friends and loved ones who still worship other gods, that the true and living God revealed in the Bible may open their eyes to turn them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God. (Acts 26:18)
