Jeremiah’s Grief

Today’s reading: Jeremiah 6:1-8:22

My selection: Jeremiah 8:18

18 My joy is gone; grief is upon me;

my heart is sick within me

My reflections: The measure of a godly man can be seen in his response to sin and evil in the world. As Paul said in I Co. 13. 6, love “does not rejoice at wrongdoing…”

Too often the response to sin and evil in others is to assume a holier-than-thou attitude. Sadly, it is not difficult for me to condemn as if I were exempt from any condemnation. But the sin and evil in our society and, even, in our churches will surely bring judgment and it should bring us grief because those unbelievers whom we love will not escape even if we are found righteous in Christ.

My challenge: What is your response to the godlessness and corruption around us?  Do you weep and grieve as Jeremiah did or assume a prideful, haughty attitude? Remember Jesus came to call sinners to repentance. Only repentant sinners are saved. Weep and pray for those who have not yet repented and believed.

Tomorrow’s reading: Jeremiah 9:1-11:23
