Paid in Full
Today’s reading: John 18:19-20:23
My selection: John 19:30
30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
My reflections: Jesus finished His work, the redemption of His people by His atonement. His death satisfied the wrath of God as He bore the sins of His elect. The condemnation that His people deserve was paid in full. There was and is nothing that can be added to it. Nothing need be added to it.
To think we need to add our works to Jesus’ death in order to secure our salvation is to diminish the value of His agony and pain. His perfect life and His offering of His body and blood cannot be supplemented by anything we do.
“It is finished.”
My challenge: Stand in awe of what Jesus did. Speechless but grateful. Amazed and humbled. That is the hope of the world for salvation. Never doubt that what He did fully and completely accomplished the purpose of salvation for His own. As the hymn goes,
Jesus paid it all, All to Him I owe, Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow.
