Prepared for Anything

Today’s reading: Ezekiel 47:1-Daniel 1:21

My selection: Daniel 1:19-20

19 And the king spoke with them, and among all of them none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Therefore they stood before the king. 20 And in every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his kingdom.

My reflections: The king of Babylon wisely chose from his captives from Judah an elite group to educate for his service. Among these was Daniel and three friends. Imagine the pressure that was on them as they entered into the life in the court of Babylonia! Nevertheless these four men proved to be wiser than those Nebuchadnezzar had always relied on.

For starters, Daniel negotiated an experiment with the king’s steward to try a healthier diet for ten days, and, then, evaluate the results. The evaluation proved Daniel right. What made the difference in these young captives who had to adjust to a foreign land and strange pagan culture?

Is there any doubt, they knew and believed what David wrote in Psalm 119:

97 Oh how I love your law!

It is my meditation all the day.

98 Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies,

for it is ever with me.

99 I have more understanding than all my teachers,

for your testimonies are my meditation.

My challenge: Do you know the Word of God well enough that it makes you wiser than your enemies and gives you more understanding than your teachers? Show your trust in His Word by making it a priority in your mind and heart. It has been given to fully equip you for the work He has for you to do (2 Timothy 3:16-17). You can be prepared for anything.

Tomorrow’s reading: Daniel 2:1-3:30
