Understanding the Identity of Jesus
Today’s reading: Luke 1:57-2:52
My selection: Luke 2:46-49
46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.” 49 And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”
My reflections: Here we learn some important things about Jesus.
1. His self-awareness. He knew at an early age that the God of Israel, who was worshiped in the temple, was His Father.
2. His mission. Even at age 12, He understood that His Father had an agenda for Him that took priority over other matters and relationships.
3. His knowledge. He amazed the teachers and others in the temple with His understanding and His answers.
My challenge: Jesus is God the Son. He existed eternally with the Father and the Spirit but He became flesh and dwelt among us in space and time. He has given us a certain revelation of the Father. Be sure you know Who He is. Worship Him and trust Him for He alone could reveal God to us and bring us to the Father. [See John 1:1-18; 14:6; I Peter 3:18]
